Channel Letters and Window Graphics for the New Museum of Illusions in Santa Monica

Museum of Illusions Santa Monica: channel letters and window graphics on the Third Street Promenade storefront

Table of Contents

The Museum of Illusions opened its Santa Monica location on the Third Street Promenade in October 2025: 12,000 square feet and more than 80 exhibits (press release). We produced and installed the storefront signage: the channel letters over the entrance, the logo, and the printed window graphics across the glass.

What we built

  • Channel letters. “MUSEUM OF ILLUSIONS” in illuminated channel letters on a raceway above the doors, with the brand’s cube logo beside the name, so the sign reads down the length of the Promenade day and night.
  • Window graphics. Full-color perforated and printed graphics across the storefront glass in the brand’s blue, showing the illusion artwork and the “Discover brain-teasing puzzles” message, while keeping the view into the lobby.
  • Door and side-window logos. Smaller lit logo panels and vinyl on the flanking windows for people approaching from the side.

Why the Promenade is a demanding place for a sign

The Third Street Promenade is a pedestrian street: people walk past slowly, close to the glass, and in daylight the glass reflects the sky. A sign there has to work at arm’s length and from the far end of the block at the same time. The channel letters cover the distance; the window graphics do the close-up work and turn the whole facade into part of the museum’s brand.

Working with a national brand’s design

Museum of Illusions has locations in many cities and a fixed brand standard. Our job was to reproduce it exactly, letter heights, color and the logo, and to adapt it to this building’s frontage and Santa Monica’s sign rules. The graphics were printed in our Pacoima shop and the letters fabricated there, then installed on site to the opening deadline.

Permits in Santa Monica

Santa Monica has its own sign code and a design review on the Promenade. Illuminated signs need a permit, and window coverage is limited by percentage, which is one reason the window graphics are designed with open areas. We handled the drawings and the application as part of the job. See sign permits.
