An ADA sign is defined by details: raised characters between 5/8 and 2 inches tall in a sans-serif font, Grade 2 braille below the text, at least 70% contrast between the characters and the background, a matte or non-glare finish, and mounting so the baseline of the tactile text sits 48 to 60 inches above the floor, on the latch side of the door where a person can approach within 18 inches without a door swinging into them. California adds its own requirements, including the triangle, circle and combined geometric symbols on restroom doors.
We build every ADA sign to these specifications in our Pacoima shop, using photopolymer or applique tactile construction and raster braille, and our installers place each sign where the code requires, not where it looks convenient. ADA signs in Los Angeles have to satisfy two rulebooks: the federal ADA Standards and California’s own Title 24 (California Building Code Chapter 11B), which is stricter. If your building inspector or landlord asks for “Title 24 signs”, this is what they mean.
Restrooms need two signs in California, not one. A geometric symbol goes on the door: a 12-inch circle for women, a 12-inch triangle for men, and a triangle inside a circle for all-gender restrooms, mounted with its center 58 to 60 inches above the floor and contrasting with the door color. A second, tactile sign goes on the wall on the latch side of the door, with raised characters and Grade 2 braille, the baseline of the raised text between 48 and 60 inches above the floor.
Every permanent room needs a tactile sign. Offices, exam rooms, conference rooms, stairwells, electrical rooms and exits get raised lettering and braille with a non-glare finish and strong contrast between the characters and the background. Pictograms, where used, sit in a field at least 6 inches high, and the international symbol of accessibility marks accessible restrooms and entrances.
