The Californian Pasadena Healthcare is a skilled nursing facility on Bellefontaine Street in Pasadena, in a low brick building with a residential feel. It needed an entrance sign that families could find from the street without a big commercial cabinet in the planting bed. We built a small monument sign to match the building. These are the notes.
What we built
A compact post-mounted monument sign: a single steel post set in a concrete footing, a rectangular double-sided cabinet with the facility’s name in its purple script logo and “Pasadena Healthcare” in clean capitals, and wrought-iron scrollwork along the top of the cabinet and at the post. The scrolls were chosen to echo the ironwork already on the property, so the sign looks like it was part of the original design rather than an addition.
Why small
- The setting. A healthcare residence on a quiet street needs to read as a home, not a shopping center. A large lit cabinet would fight the building.
- The audience. Visitors arrive slowly and on foot from the parking area; a sign at eye level next to the walkway does the job.
- The rules. Pasadena limits freestanding sign size, and smaller signs move through review faster.
Materials
Aluminum cabinet, powder-coated to match the iron, with a printed and laminated face that holds the brand colors in full sun. The post and scrollwork are steel, primed and finished for outdoor use. The sign is built for a decade outside with nothing more than an occasional wash.
