Much of Los Feliz was built before 1940, so the buildings are rarely a blank canvas. A brick or terra cotta facade, a wood-framed awning or a decorative cornice changes how a sign can be anchored, and a careless installation on a historic storefront is visible from the sidewalk for years. We survey the wall first, choose the mounting method for that material and keep penetrations to the minimum the sign needs.
Access is the other factor. Vermont and Hillhurst have narrow sidewalks, metered street parking and residents directly above the shops, so installs are scheduled for early mornings or off-peak hours and the bucket truck or lift is positioned to keep the sidewalk and the neighboring businesses open.
